debate, president obama and mitt romney will have the chance to answer questions that they themselves have been somewhat reluctant to answer. we're going to run through some of the big ones keeping them honest. first, we have late polling. new cnn numbers that show the race tightening. president obama still leads 50% to 47%. the three-point gap is within the poll's margin of error. mr. obama got a four-point bounce to put him in the lead. the president's favorable rating meantime remains above the crucial 50% mark at 52%. mr. romney is close but still in negative territory at 49%. he enjoys an edge on handling the deficit and joblessness, but trails on virtually every other big issue, including medicare, taxes and foreign policy. keeping them honest, when it comes to some of those issues, both candidates have come up short either on specifics or credibility. issues like cutting taxes without ballooning the deficit or burdening the middle class. the romney campaign has been asked again and again for specifics. here's runningmate paul ryan just yesterday on fox news. >> there's been a t

debate, the pundits declared mitt romney the winner. he was. he seemed engaged, forceful, punchy. obama seemed passive, detached, and glum. but what's more significant than how romney said things is what he said. romney repeatedly insisted he was not advocating a big tax cut. in fact, he declared unequivocally that he would not cut taxes at all if they added to the deficit at all. now, as "the washington post" reporter checks out, for two years romney has been campaigning on a tax cut that would cost around $5 trillion over ten years. romney said he would eliminate deductions and cut spending to pay for it. he never offers details. he did say he would cut funding for public broadcasting which was 0.01% of federal spending in 2012. medicaid was 0.13%. romney also spoke in favor of regulations including much of the dodd/frank bill and he repeatedly held up as a model his health care plan in massachusetts which has added center the individual mandate and on which obama care is based. romney's transformation did not happen overnight. the candidate has been reworking his stump speech. in a v

governor romney at the beginning of this debate wrote and said what we did in massachusetts could be a model for the nation. and i agree that the democratic legislators in massachusetts might have given some advice to republicans in congress about how to cooperate, but the fact of the matter is, we used the same advisers and they say it's the same plan. it -- when governor romney talks about this board, for example, unelected board that we've created. what this is, is a group of health care experts, doctors, et cetera, to figure out how can we reduce the cost of care in the system overall because there are two ways of dealing with the health care crisis. one is to simply leave a bunch of people uninsured and let them fend for themselves, to let businesses figure out how long they can continue to pay premiums until finally they give up and their workers are no longer getting insured. abe and that's been the trend line. or alternatively we can figure out how to make the cost of health care more effective. there are ways of doing it. at cleveland clinic, one of the best health care system

have for mitt romney, given the state of the election campaign right now? >> well, i think you know the debates are very important. >> crucial? >> i think so. and i think if he's gonna double down on that 47% remark, that will cause difficulties because we now know the overwhelming number of those people work and have children. the reason they don't pay federal income taxes is because the median income is as low as 1995. until the current election season, republicans and democrats supported both the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit. i doubled the earned income tax credit. it was signed under a republican president. reagan started it. we started it with a strong support of republicans in congress. president bush dealt with that, then president obama increased the earned income tax credit for families with more than three children. this is a rejection of basically more than three decades of bipartisan policy to support working families. it's not a bunch of free loaders. there's only 4% of the total population who don't pay federal income tax and don't work and may not

massachusetts governor, mitt romney, republican nominee. the debates are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions, via the internet and other means, but i made the final selections, and for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments as i announced in advance will be three on the economy, and one each on health care, the role of government, and governing. with an emphasis through out on differences, specifics, and choices. both candidates will also have two-minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent. no cheers, applause, boos, hisses, among other noisy, distracting things, so we may all concentrate on what the candidates have to say. there is a noise excepti

cnn poll of polls shows a lead for mitt romney. romney leading obama here, 48% to 47% in our cnn poll of polls. and, john, i'm ondering, since we're seeing this post debate swing, it appears toward romney, are the predebate polls in ohio that show that obama lead, are those pretty much null and void? >> i would wait until the top of the hour and release our new cnn poll from the state of ohio. i talked to the romney campaign, some sources in the romney campaign a short time ago, and they say they have governor romney down one point in ohio. we'll show you our numbers at the top of the hour. there is no question the national polls show a debate bounce and you feel it on the ground, talking to people here, talking to republican strategists in the state and the obama campaign can see, they may dispute the numbers but they can see this is a place where governor romney got a bounce after the first debate. this is a place he needed it. no republican has won the presidency without ohio. seven points, eight points, minus ten for governor romney, just a week ago, some republicans were saying is there any way to win without ohio. forget about that, this will be a battle
